The Installation of Our New 2000 lb Gorbel Overhead Crane
Semco is excited to share another significant update from our graphite machining facility in Lorain, OH: we recently installed a new 2000 lb Gorbel Overhead Crane. This state-of-the-art crane is a game changer for our operations, particularly in our lathe department. Our Haas lathes are state-of-the-art, but the ways we were moving graphite blocks and tools around the department was not. That changed with the installation of the Gorbel Overhead Crane, which spans across the shop floor, creating a safer work environment for our team and enhancing efficiency in loading and unloading parts and tools.

The Overhead Crane’s Impact on Productivity
The crane's impressive capabilities extend beyond safety to enhance efficiency and productivity in our operations. Spanning 50 feet in one direction and 22.5 feet in the other, the Gorbel Overhead Crane provides extensive coverage, allowing our team to easily maneuver and transport parts and tools across the lathe department with precision and ease. As you might imagine, moving large graphite blocks around to be cut and shaped by different machines presents difficulties that owe not only to the size and weight of graphite blocks, but also to the positioning of those blocks as they move between stations. This durable new overhead crane can handle any weight we could put on it, but it also helps in stabilizing the positioning or materials or tools, thus increasing efficiency and accuracy.
Our Haas Lathes Made More Efficient
Our shop floor employees’ job of loading and unloading materials and equipment into our Haas lathes is now more efficient than ever, thanks to the Gorbel Crane's lifting capacity and versatility. Whether it's transferring heavy components or positioning delicate tools, the crane's smooth and controlled movements enable our team to complete tasks quickly, efficiently, and safely, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity while protecting our employees. We’re not sure who will be more pleased with this update, our customers or our shop floor employees.

The last few years have seen many updates to our shop floor, from a new vacuum system to deal with graphite dust to advances in our CAD software.
